of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care
for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education
and practice.
American
Society of Transplant Surgeons
The ASTS welcomes surgical specialists who are actively engaged in
transplantation.
The
American Society of Transplantation
The American Society of Transplantation (AST) is a multidisciplinary
group of physicians and scientists dedicated to the promotion of education
and research relating to transplantation medicine and immunology.
The AST has been in existence since 1982 and fosters communication
between the multiple specialists involved in transplant medicine today.
The goal is to effect efficient transfer of information from the basic
science laboratory to transplantation clinics and ultimately, to improve
patient care and outcomes.
Harvard
Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program
BBS is an interdepartmental program within the Harvard Medical School
Division of Medical Sciences, and offers interdisciplinary research
training in the following areas: biochemistry, cell biology, genetics,
pathology, microbiology, structural biology, pharmacology, virology,
and developmental biology.
Harvard
Medical School Division of Medical Sciences - Immunology Program
The Program in Immunology, administered through the Division of Medical
Sciences at Harvard Medical School, is one of the four offered interdisciplinary
programs leading to the Ph.D. degree in medical sciences through the
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University. The program
is based at Harvard Medical School and is an interdepartmental, multidisciplinary
degree program.

hospital in the United States and the largest in New England. The
TBRC is a Center within the Surgery Department at the MGH.
MGH
Transplant Unit

standard types of transplantation currently available, including cardiac,
heart-lung, lung, kidney, kidney-pancreas, liver, liver-small bowel
and bone marrow.
National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
Today, NIAID provides the major support for scientists conducting
research aimed at developing better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent
the many infectious, immunologic and allergic diseases that afflict
people worldwide. NIAID is composed of four extramural divisions:
the Division of AIDS; the Division of Allergy, Immunology and Transplantation;
the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases; and the Division
of Extramural Activities. In addition, NIAID scientists conduct intramural
research in laboratories located in Bethesda, Rockville and Frederick,
Maryland, and in Hamilton, Montana.
National
Institutes of Health
The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better
health for everyone. NIH works toward that mission by: conducting
research in its own laboratories; supporting the research of non-Federal
scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research
institutions throughout the country and abroad; helping in the training
of research investigators; and fostering communication of biomedical
information.
National
Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation is an independent U.S. government
agency responsible for promoting science and engineering through programs
that invest over $3.3 billion per year in almost 20,000 research and
education projects in science and engineering.
The
American Association of Immunologists
The purpose of AAI is to advance knowledge of immunology and related
disciplines, to foster interchange of ideas and information among
investigators in the various disciplines and to promote an understanding
of the field of immunology.
The
Transplantation Society
The Transplantation Society was founded in 1966 to provide a common
forum for physicians and basic scientists involved in transplantation.
The Society currently has over 2000 members representing 49 countries.
Thoracic
Surgery Foundation for Research and Education
The purpose of The Thoracic Surgery Foundation is to increase the
knowledge base of cardiothoracic surgery and to enhance the knowledge
of all thoracic surgeons so that ultimately patients may be better
served. The Foundation is committed to increasing resources by enlisting
the participation of all thoracic surgeons and others who support
its purpose. The Foundation is also committed to developing future
leaders and standard bearers of our discipline. To this end, the Board
of Directors believes that all available income from donations should
be put to use immediately so that awards may increase as donations
increase.
Zurich
University Hospital Laboratory for Transplantation Immunology
The goal of LTI research is to find novel well-defined strategies
to inhibit some of the specific reactions of the immune system that
eventually lead to transplant rejection or graft-versus-host disease.
Our current projects are focused on the role of ABO-incompatibility
in allogeneic bone-marrow transplantation, the role of natural killer
cells in allogeneic transplantation, and the interactions between
the human immune system and porcine xenografts.
